What drives an artist to stand in her black corset in Times Square on a soapbox? It began at 17 with her first shoplifted f*ck me bra. Over the course of this unfiltered and soul-baring event, Diana Oh's personal collection of unmentionables comes on and off as she and her band ignite the audience to create a saner, safer, more courageous world for us all.

“It's really, really hard to be this badass. Thankfully, [Diana]'s got it covered.” - Eric March, Upworthy

Written and Performed by Dael Orlandersmith
Directed by Neel Keller
January - February 2018

New York Premiere: In January, we will welcome back Rattlestick alumni writer Dael Orlandersmith (Horsedreams, Pulitzer-Prize Finalist Yellowman) with her piece UNTIL THE FLOOD, a one-person show written in response to Michael Brown’s death. After interviewing scores of St. Louis residents, Orlandersmith plays the many faces and voices of life in St. Louis without advancing any one viewpoint above others.

BroadwayWorld says, Dael Orlandersmith does an impressive job of inhabiting each of these characters and bringing them to life on the stage. It's a bravura performance, and one that should not be missed.”

Written and Performed by Mashuq Mushtaq Deen
Directed by Chay Yew

New York Premiere: A hilarious and moving story about the complexities that loved ones experience when someone close to them transitions from one gender to another. Told entirely from the point of view of family and friends, yet performed by Deen himself, DRAW THE CIRCLE compassionately brings to life the often-ignored struggle that a family goes through when their child transitions from one gender to another.

Brooklyn’s BEAT Festival describes DRAW THE CIRCLE as an “effortless blend of comedy and intense intimacy."

Rattlestick’s Apprentice Company comprised of 18-30 year-old theater artists from traditionally diverse and underrepresented communities, is mentored by Lucy Thurber. The mission of Middle Voice is to create theater that embraces risk and encourages ensemble, and to reach different class segments in American society through the company’s work.

After successful readings and workshops at Clubbed Thumb, Walkerspace, and MCC, Middle Voice will produce the workshop production of Xavier Galva’s The Parlour. Set in the high-stakes and hierarchical world of New York City fine dining, this sharp ensemble comedy examines the inequity found in this upscale members-only restaurant, and in their own lives.

The Laurents/Hatcher Foundation has awarded The Arthur Laurents Centennial Grant to Middle Voice at Rattlestick to revive The Enclave. The play shines a light on a seemingly liberal group of friends who alienates one of their own when he introduces his boyfriend to the group. First produced in 1973, The New York Times described, “Mr. Laurents writes in an attractively hard-edged style, with jokes cracking like ice in extra-dry martinis."

October 17, 2017

Rattlestick will host its annual Alumni Jam, where we welcome back our alumni playwrights to share excerpts of new plays.

Our annual Alumni Jam is a grand-slam kind of evening where we invite back a cohort of some of our most beloved all-star and up-and-coming playwrights to share excerpts of their new work. The evening is an opportunity to gather in an intimate setting to experience some explosive new plays, to meet the creators, and to continue building our Rattlestick community. This year, we will host the Alumni Jam on October 17 at 7:30pm with Zachary Quinto as our Master of Ceremonies.

You will have a chance to hear directly from the writers about what has made their experience at Rattlestick so memorable. The evening will offer an exclusive first look into the work of these exciting writers, and a glance into the process of what it takes to write a new play. And there will be a party afterwards!

Some of the writers who will be sharing work are Sheila Callaghan (Elevada, That Pretty Pretty, Everything You Touch, "Shameless" "United States of Tara"), Jessica Dickey (Amish Project, Charles Ives Take Me Home), Laura Eason (The Undeniable Sound of Right Now, Sex with Strangers, "House of Cards"), Xavier Galva (Middle Voice at Rattlestick's The Parlour), Florencia Lozano (underneathmybed), among others.

Last year's writers included: Martyna Majok (Ironbound), Laith Nakli (Shesh Yak), Dael Orlandersmith (Horsedreams), Adam Rapp (The Hallway Trilogy, Through the Yellow Hour), Lucy Thurber (The Hilltown Plays), and Jonathan Tolins (Buyer and Cellar, Last Sunday in June).

“These plays are provocative, courageous, complex, and very, very new,” says Artistic Director Daniella Topol. “Most of these playwrights have yet to have a world premiere in New York.”
