Each season, Rattlestick’s core programming is comprised of at least four Mainstage Off-Broadway productions. In addition to our Mainstage season, our Emerging Playwrights Program & Reading Series organizes 40-50 staged readings followed by talkback sessions for the playwright with our artistic director and literary managers. This enables writers to further develop their play and provides opportunities to network with directors and actors. We also feature a series of concerts we call the New Music Series.

MAINSTAGE

The Mainstage shows are the most important part of the theater’s programming. The shows are culled from a variety of sources, including submissions, our Emerging Playwrights Program, and relationships we have established with many talented playwrights across the country. These productions are augmented with top-notch actors, directors and designers.

EMERGING PLAYWRIGHTS PROGRAM

Our Emerging Playwrights Series focuses on expanding the circle of artists to whom we can give Rattlestick’s development experience. We receive almost 600 scripts per year, and we read them all. We continue to accept open submissions, even in an environment where most other theaters have begun to limit their review to agent submissions. One of our greatest strengths over the years has been our ability to create a truly open, collaborative environment in which artists can create and take risks without fear of failure or quick judgment. The Emerging Playwrights Program includes In-House Readings, Invited Readings, The Evening Reading Series and the F*!@cking Good Plays Festival. We structure our in-house readings to give playwrights a chance to share brand new work in an insulated and protected environment with Rattlestick Staff. They are usually done with little rehearsal and actors reading the play around a table in an informal way. A discussion with the actors and staff gives the playwright an opportunity for immediate feedback and response. The Evening Reading Series is our more formal public reading series (we hold about 12 per year). These performances give playwrights an opportunity to rehearse with a director and group of professional actors. They then hear the play out loud for an audience at the theater. These readings are free and open to the public. The F*!@cking Good Plays Festival is our newest program. Working in collaboration with our readers group, we select seven plays by unrepresented writers for a slot in the Festival. We assign each play a director and cast of professional actors and give them rehearsal space and a public reading of the play. Each writer meets with our Artistic Director and the Literary Department for in-depth feedback about their play. Playwrights that have participated in past Theaterjam festivals include Stephen Belber, Sheila Callaghan, Kristoffer Diaz, Jessie Dickey, J. Michael Friedman, Dael Orlandersmith, Adam Rapp, Daniel Reitz, Daniel Talbott and Lucy Thurber.
